Age is just a number, a saying very often used to soften a feeling of passing time. However, it is important that is doesn’t become a cliché. Let me share some inspiring examples from the world of fashion – which is particularly sensitive to stereotypes related to age and appearance.
These five wonderful ladies prove that age is just a number, and beauty and style do not have an expiration date. We like to define beauty by measuring height, weight and age. As a photographer I experience this quite often.
Fortunately, I’ve seen a lot of diversity on the catwalks lately. This Sunday there will be a show in Brussels with the participation of many beautiful models, who do not much a stereotype prevailing in the fashion world.
Thus, women should not be underestimated just because they have reached a certain age. On the contrary, older women have experience, knowledge and achievements that give them a lot of attractiveness. Here are five amazing, inspirational and beautiful women.
Linda Rodin has lived many lives. She is a model, stylist and editor. She built a career as the owner of a boutique in Soho, stylist for Victoria’s Secret, Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue. At 59, she founded a cosmetics company in her kitchen in Chelsea, New York.
Linda has her unique style (described in Vogue as “silver hair, large glasses and bright lipstick”), thanks to which she gained a wide range of fans on social media (Instagram).
Linda exudes beauty and confidence and is one of the people who make everything look so effortless. She is an endless source of inspiration.
Lyn Slater aka Accidental Icon is a professor at Fordham University in New York who accidentally became a model, stylist and blogger.
“Accidental Icon” started in in 2014. One day she was waiting at the Lincoln Center for a friend with whom she made an appointment for lunch. As luck would have it, it was New York Fashion Week at the time. Dressed in a suit of Japanese designer Yōji Yamamoto and with a Chanel handbag, she attracted the attention of photojournalists chatting to stylishly dressed people. Paparazzi, thinking that they are dealing with a great personality from the world of fashion, began to take pictures of Lyn. When the mentioned friend finally got to the meeting, she replied with a laugh: “I became an accidental icon”. Then she decided to start a blog with such a title.
Her style is amazing and her approach to life is even better. Lyn is not afraid of new challenges and living on her own terms. If you’re looking for inspiration to create a design, follow her Instagram with half a million other people.
Maye Musk is a model, dietitian and mother of Elon Musk. This Canadian-South African lady at the age of 69 is one of the best models in the industry.
She has been one for 50 years, appearing on magazine covers, e.g. in Time. The New York Post called her a “star in itself.”
Maye works as a dietitian and, given how nice she looks, we should all follow her example and learn how to stay healthy and fit. As she said, “If you enjoy life, you become more beautiful because you are happier.”

Age is just a number
All ladies prove that we should live our own lives to the fullest. You have to take risks and take on new things as well as learn and develop. Most importantly, you have to accept yourself, enjoy life, and share it with others. This is beauty. It’s not about weight, height or wrinkles. It’s about the spark in the eye that shows someone’s joy and passion and which is more beautiful than any face or body.
