From A to B – how to be happy

From point A to B: how to be happy and where your happiness is.

So what is happiness? I will reply originally: “It depends.”

In the previous post I wrote about how to start searching what happiness means for you. The way is to ask yourself the right question. Think about how your situation could look like in ten years, without dealing now with formalities and practical details.

Now all you have to do is to set a plan step by step, what you will do to move from the current
situation, more or less happy, to a place where we you feel better, stronger, have more energy and take full advantage of life. In short, your plan how to be happy.

So, more scientifically the issue is presented in the diagram below:

The problem is that our image is just a simplified model. You have to dive into details and come to terms with the fact that it will not be a straight path.

Let us assume that we consider mankind as an intelligent species in general. One of the symptoms of intelligence is that we can make plans for the future and, if necessary, influence the reality that surrounds us to achieve the goal.

However, there is one additional complication.

Very often we have no control over events, or something simply goes wrong. I wrote about it also here. When something inconsistent with the plan happens, we do not give up. We correct it, or change the target a bit and move on.

For example, your goal is to move to Tenerife (just like mine), and suddenly it turns out that you can’t afford to buy a house there because the prices had risen terribly. In this situation, you can consider a different destination with a similar climate, or live in a more cozy flat and spend more time on a beach.

To illustrate it in a more scientific way, let me present the following diagram:

Sometimes, unfortunately, things go wrong – for example, you will fail an exam, or don’t get a job you wanted.

You get depressed then and you come to the conclusion that you are a failure.

Of course you are not a loser! You have to have a bit of compassion for yourself. It is not about looking for excuses or blaming others. Simply, you’ve screwed up and you need to fix it. There are two way, or you go for another job, or you try again.

To conclude:

The fact that the road to the goal will not be easy is a fact. There is no point in fighting it, or giving up on the first bump. Because we like metaphors, let’s compare reaching goals to driving. If there are works on your way, you don’t pull over and weep, just take a detour.
